From what age should you start swimming lessons?
Swimming is not only a great form of exercise, but also an important skill for later. Especially in a country with a lot of natural and recreational water, it is wise that children learn to swim well, but from what age do you have to start swimming lessons? That is an important question for the parents. Sometimes you want to start as early as possible, and in other situations it can be better to wait a while.

Swimming lessons from what age?
In many countries, including the Netherlands, it is recommended to start swimming lessons at a young age. Usually it is also started at a 4 or 5 year old. At this age, children are generally physically and emotionally ready to learn the basic principles of swimming. We also think this is a great age to experience swimming lessons for the first time. Why?
- At this age, children are adventurous, curious and very active. Contact with water will certainly play a role in their development, for example in a (tropical) swimming pool, in the sea or just in a recreational lake. They can easily end up in the water themselves, even in places where there is no supervision. Early swimming lessons can then teach them the basic skills so that they can keep their heads above the water and swim themselves safely to the side.
- We often see this during swimming lessons: learning to swim creates a lot of self -confidence and pride for the somewhat shy children. Especially if they are allowed to flutter with their A diploma! They also learn to handle water early, so that they will develop less or no fear of it later.
- Swimming lessons also offer great opportunities for social interaction with other children. Friends were made like this during or after the lessons!
Every child develops differently
However, it is important to know that children develop at different ages, and there is no 'one-size-fits-all' approach to determining the right age to start swimming lessons. Some children can be ready rather than others, while some need a little more time to get comfortable in the water. Fortunately our instructors adjust the swimming lessons accordingly so that every child gets the same amount of attention that it deserves!
Moreover, swimming lessons are available for babies and toddlers, often known as so -called "water hazing." These lessons are intended to familiarize children at a young age and to help them relax in the water. While babies and toddlers do not necessarily learn to swim in the traditional sense, these lessons can help to prepare them for regular swimming lessons when they are above 4 years old.
Is swimming lessons mandatory from a certain age?
No, the law does not state that children from a certain age have to go to swimming lessons. In fact, swimming lessons is not mandatory. However, all parents with children in the Netherlands are encouraged to start swimming lessons at some point. For one that is at the age of 4, for the other it is only at the age of 6. Starting with swimming lessons does not mean that this always has to be at the age of 4. Is your child not yet physically or emotionally? No problem, then you just start a little later. Nice tip: our instructors specialize in guiding young swimmers to their first swimming diploma. We know the fears that children can have for swimming lessons or for water.
