When to register for swimming lessons?
In Amsterdam, waiting lists are often long, so our advice is simple: register your child for swimming lessons . Although most children don't actually start until around age four or five, you can often put them on the waiting list as early as their third birthday. By booking early, you increase the chance that your child can attend on your preferred day or at a specific location once they're the right age.
How does the process work after registration?
As soon as we receive your registration, you'll receive a confirmation. Your child will then be placed on our waiting list. We continuously monitor the flow of students in our groups. Because we work with small groups, we can provide plenty of personal attention, but this also means we only offer a place if there's actually space.
As soon as a spot becomes available that matches your preferences, we'll contact you to schedule a start date. For children who have already swum elsewhere or are joining the technique training, we often schedule an hour to determine their level.
How much does it cost to register for swimming lessons?
At most swimming schools, including ours, you pay a one-time registration fee. This fee covers administrative costs and ensures your child is officially registered in our system. After payment, their place on the waiting list is confirmed. Want to know more about all the costs of our swimming lessons? With us, you can choose between 45-minute or 30-minute lessons. View our rates on our website.
What else should you pay attention to?
Besides timing and costs, there are a few things that make a difference for a good start:
- Choosing a group: is a regular group suitable for your child, or does a group for children with disabilities require extra attention?
- Swimming technique: If your child already has the ABC diploma, technique training is a great way to improve their fitness and strokes.
- Equipment: Before your first lesson, check whether you have a well-fitting swimsuit or swimming trunks and whether goggles are required.
The most important thing is that your child feels safe. At Van der Wal, we focus on fun and personal growth, so the path to their swimming diploma is a positive experience.
