We look at the needs, potential and details of every child. We draw up a swimming plan on the basis of these conditions. In this way we teach every child to swim technically well in a relaxing way.
A swimming diploma is often the first diploma that children get in their lives. That is of course something to be proud of, but it can also cause a lot of tension! Of course we take this into account, so that every child can learn to swim naturally. We welcome all children to our lessons, including children who need some extra attention! New life jacket policy
Compulsory life jacket for the A diploma:
- From January 2026, all swimmers in blocks A.1 to A.5 are required to wear a life jacket.
- Permitted brands: Only our own Van der Wal life jackets and Easyswim Pro are permitted.
- Costs:
- Purchase: one-time €45
- Rent: €5 per month (up to block A.6)
- Requirements: The life jackets must meet the safety requirements as described in our House Rules .
Do you have a vest you own that wasn't purchased from Van Der Wal Sport en Zwemacademie? Then you must inform our administration department yourself before your subscription starts. If we don't respond, or if you don't let us know via email/link or WhatsApp whether you're buying or renting a vest or have one you own, we will start the subscription, including a monthly vest rental fee of €5.
If the vest is not approved by the instructor, you will still need to purchase or rent a vest from us.

For all monthly rates you have lessons once a week with the duration you have chosen.
If you aren't able to attend a swimming lesson and informed us about it at least 24 hours before the swimming lesson on the personal page of the swimmer, then you will be able to catch up that lesson later. With the catching up you can plan your own catch-up lessons with a maximum number of 6 catch-up lessons.
The month amount is automatically settled at closing days You can find the closing days on the personal page.

At our swimming lessons in Amsterdam we strive to teach children to swim step by step according to the ABC. The Swimming ABC is a structured method in which children learn the skills of swimming in a safe and pleasant way. Various swimming skills are taught through the three diplomas A, B and C, so that children can eventually swim independently. Different swimming diplomas
A total of 3 regular swimming diplomas can be obtained in the Netherlands. You start with the swimming diploma A where the basic techniques for safe swimming are treated. Swimming diploma B will take this further and finally you can also choose to obtain swimming diploma C. The advice is to obtain as many swimming diplomas as possible if you have not yet done so.
From what age swimming lessons?
There is no mandatory "from age" when starting swimming lessons . However, the advice is that children will start from the age of 5, because from this age most children are able to meet the requirements for the A diploma. Some parents prefer their child to learn to swim at the age of 4. Often you can register your child a year or shorter in advance, because then your child can start swimming lessons on time.
How long does swimming lessons take?
This of course depends on the child. One will be able to swim faster than the other. A gross rule of thumb is that most children need between 40 and 50 clock hours, so that they eventually get their A diploma. The time to obtain the B diploma and the C diploma is usually a bit shorter. We at Van der Wal Sport think it is important that every child or his or her pace can obtain their swimming diploma. That is why we give the children all the space and time so that they can be secure in the water. Being safe during swimming is very important for us to teach the children.

Why is it useful?
Getting a swimming diploma is a wise choice because it provides you with essential skills in the water. With a swimming diploma you are able to save yourself in emergency situations. Moreover, having a swimming diploma increases your self -confidence and opens the door to various water activities and sports. Choose wisely and invest in yourself by working towards achieving swimming safety.
Swimming skills
After obtaining your ABC diploma you have the choice to continue swimming. You can also continue with swimming skills training, where you lift everything you have learned to a higher level. Moreover, increasing swimming skills for nicer experience full of confidence offers!
But is not enough to obtain your ABC diploma? Getting these diplomas is certainly enough, but for the water enthousiasts among us there is still a possibility to grow further. For example, there are children who continue until they have completed all of the possible swimming lessons. However, this is not often the case, so you don't have to worry if they do not want that.
In short, achieving swimming skills is not necessary, but can be very fun and educational!
