Why is there chlorine in swimming pool water?

If you have ever visited a swimming pool, you are probably familiar with the characteristic scent of chlorine hanging in the air. But why is chlorine actually added to the swimming pool water? In this article we will investigate this subject further and discover the reasons behind the use of chlorine in swimming pools.

Why chlorine?

Chlorine is used in swimming pools because of its disinfecting properties. It plays a crucial role in maintaining a healthy and safe swimming environment. When people swim, they carry all kinds of microorganisms, such as bacteria and viruses. Even the best filter installation cannot prevent these microorganisms from penetrating the swimming pool water. Chlorine comes into the picture here.

Disinfection of the swimming pool water

When chlorine is added to the water, it responds with the dirt and microorganisms in the swimming pool water. This reaction makes these germs inactive, so that the water is disinfected. The chlorine kills bacteria and viruses, preventing the spread of diseases. This is crucial, since swimming pools can be ideal environments for the growth and distribution of various pathogens.

Chlorine and pH value

The addition of chlorine in swimming pool water has not only to do with disinfection, but also with maintaining the correct pH value. The pH value is a measure of the acidity of water. Chlorine is the most effective when disinfecting in a pH range of 7.2 to 7.6. That is why it is important to keep the pH value of the swimming pool water in balance. A correct balance between chlorine and the pH value ensures optimum disinfection and prevents irritations in eyes and skin in swimmers.

Are there alternatives for chlorine?

Although the most used disinfectant is chlorine in swimming pool water, alternatives are also available. Because some people can be sensitive to chlorine or find its odor very unpleasant, some swimming owners choose alternative systems such as ozone treatment, ultraviolet (UV) treatment or salt electrolysis. These methods can also be effective in disinfecting the swimming pool water, but each have their own advantages and disadvantages.

Conclusion

Chloor is an essential part when maintaining clean and safe swimming pool water. It offers effective disinfection of microorganisms and prevents the spread of pathogens. It is important to maintain the right balance between chlorine and the pH value of the swimming pool water to achieve optimum results. Although alternative disinfection methods are available, chlorine remains the most used and reliable choice for swimming owners around the world.
